So today was interesting. We had another guest speaker who did really well. I learned a lot about star wars... We actually did a good bit to do with real teaching or, doing the thing. We learned new strategies to read at any level and can relate to music pretty well.
She talked about reading briefly through something just to get an idea about it. Then going through section by section discriminating differences throughout. This is something we do in music every time we practice. We get a new piece and try just reading through it. then we go back and practice sections, especially the hard sections. Except for music we have to practice these sections at a VERY slow pace and gradually speed it up. And instead of doing this in a few minutes, it takes us hours or days depending on the piece.
Everything in this lesson however can be used somehow in a music classroom so I actually enjoyed today. But the year is almost over. I'm excited for the summer however I do now know what to do. I've had two summer camps ask me to work for them as well as three weddings I have to play for. If it were up to me I would just rock climb everywhere. The only problem is that I need money because school says I can't have any.
Some of the reading strategies that we did today can totally be transferred into practicing our music. I love how these strategies lend themselves to music so well, as opposed to others that make you sit there and scratch your head trying to figure out how to incorporate them.
ReplyDeleteDon't get discouraged about your summer. You're going to do great at whatever you decide to do, just sit down and figure out what you value most and go for it!
I really liked reading your connections from the guest speaker and an actual music class. I think that incorporating those reading strategies in your future music classroom would be great! I enjoyed learning about those reading strategies more than I thought I would.
ReplyDeleteI think your summer is going to be great no matter what you decide to do!
Bill,
ReplyDeleteI have no knowledge on Star Wars so I was lost during that conversation. However, I did enjoy learning about different reading strategies and seeing how I can fit them into my discipline.
I know the money struggle. Don't worry, only 1 year of school left for us and then we can do whatever we want (probably not). Who said growing up was fun?
Hey Bill. The star wars thing was really cool. I liked the strategies she was talking about when she was talking about teaching math. Although, I had some doubts about relating to scenarios in the bar tending profession. I understand this would get the kids' attentions, but I feel like some parents might have a problem about this, especially around this area.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the guest speaker. I'm glad she related it a little to each of our disciplines instead of just staying on ELA. It brought up a lot of memories when I was in school. We did a lot of the same stuff she talked about in class. I'm really curious to see how we are going to teach these similar strategies in a music classroom. Me and Josh made an anchor chart today and it was really difficult.
